Post- observation feedback - REFLECTION

My biggest fear when i was about to be observe by my guide teacher from UPLA, was than nothing (nothing!) will work out, and well was almost like that....The unexpected things happen just that day, the long act before entering class, the head master kept the girls in the act to check them if they had or not parasits in their heads, so I was unable to start my class on time, with only 45 minutes left to start my class I realized that the sun was shining to bright, that the data couldn't be seen for my students, luckily I got handouts for them, but anyways the ore of my class was within the slides, slides that were not apreciated by noone, said this, I know now that we has a teachers have to have a back up plan, in case all the situations of the world will be against your lesson plan, have a plan B, C or I could say D...just in case, I was very nervous the day Miss Isabel went to visit my class, luckily and spite of everything tha could go wrong my dear students were super that day, they participate and like the activity, unfortunately the bell rang 5 minutes earlier and I could not do the closing, so I was histerical by that time, and not having the post conversation with the supervisor left me very sick till wendnesday, when the teacher finally gave feedback and guess what...I was not that bad as I thought, I just have to improve my self-confidence....and I know that if I study and finish my program is because I like it...and I know how to do it ;).

Reflecting Writing Nº 1: The English Classroom

I-. What do you think the cartoon provided bellow is illustrating?
Why? Answer briefly.

What the image shows is what all new teachers are afraid of having in their classes, CHAOS. The kids are not paying any attention to the teacher, that clearly has not turning around to see what is going on with their students, and she is only writing on the board, there is no calssroom management, a very important part of our work as a future teachers, not having the control of the class leads to a complete failure of the class itself, students need to have a strong image of the teacher, not meaning strong in the physical aspect but strong as a presence in the classroom, the person that will stand in front and teach the students not only content of the English matter, but the teacher also has to teach values and give the enough trust to the students for them to feel comfortable in the classroom, I will go and pursue this kind of teaching in my life, be friends of your students, when one has the trust and the understanding of the students, one feels comfortable standing in front of the class and knows that the students are paying attetion to your class, you get to know this by the way they participate in your class, even if it is with a silly joke.

Reflective Writing:

Taking into account the information collected during the observation stage, and the team teaching stage...

1-. Reflect on the students' behavior in the English classroom

Well, during my whole process I could see that English is a hard time for kids that are not really interested in the subject, they get distracted easily and they do not do any effort for succed in it. Some of them, on the other hand, like English but they are afraid of making any kind of mistake in front of the class, the laughter of their partners really influnces the behavior of the kids when talking of English is about.

2-. Have you seen your students behaving this way? Support your answer.

I have seen my students behaving this way, and I felt awful, when you loose control of your class you can see the ship sinking in front of you eyes and there is nothing you can do about it. When good manner words do not work, threaten your students is not your style and whe the activity you planned is not the thing that they want to do in that moment, nothing is what you have in your hands, but what we never have to loose is calm in front of them, do not show never a sad face neither scare, that will only ake hings worst, remain calm and try to do your best, be sure that that moment will be over at a point and then you can reflect and know what did you do wrong or you can be aware of the things that need to be improve, that is what I did.

3-. Propose ideas to deal with disruptive students in your school.

In the school where I'm doing my internship I think I do not have major disruptive problems with my students, in fact I am really surprised because it is a very poor school, in a very isolated area of Viña del Mar, when a situation like that has everything to lead to a dangerous situation, in the school occurs the opposite, there are adorable students that are at the same time very respectful and polite to me, of course there are some cases when the student stands out for his/her behavior but I can relate that to the age and the stage they are, they need to be the center and be noticed.
My idea is to provide students with what is missing in their lives, and that's love and attention, when one gets to hear the students everything seems to be easier with them, in a society like we are right now with the lack of communication seems to be a daily situation, we have to deal with students that barely talk with their parents or even see them, and a situation like that is what we have to change, kids need to be heard.

An article that made me think....

Article: "Using Differentiated Instruction Activities to Meet the Needs of ALL Your Students"

I am always amazed at the range of ability levels of my students within any given class. Within one 8th grade class I may have students who struggle to read and write while at the same time have students (within the same class) who are reading and writing on an upper high school level. In fact, in some cases, I have 8th grade students who are actually reading and writing on a college level.
So how is a teacher supposed to teach the struggling students without boring the advanced students? This is one of the toughest instructional challenges a teacher faces...trying to meet the needs of all of these students.

Differentiated instruction activities are designed to just that...meet the needs of your lower level students while at the same time challenging your upper level students.

There are many different types of differentiated instruction activities, but it is always good to start with Compacting.

Compacting is a three-step process for addressing the needs of all students of all ability levels.

Here are the steps:

1. Assess what each student already knows about the material to be studied and what the student still needs to master.

2. Create plans for the students to learn what is not known and excuse those students who have already mastered the material.

3. Create plans for the "freed-up" time to be spent on enrichment activities or accelerated study.

Compacting is something that can be done to start each and every unit of study. By using differentiated instruction activities such as compacting, teachers can address the needs of students of all ability levels.

Well, today while I was planing and trying to build a new test for my 8th grade students, I realized that my students (just like the article says) do not have the same level, this means that the tests that I am preparing do not fit to everybody, and makes me feel a litle dissapointed of myself...and that is the reason why today I decided to help one of my student (she asked for my help) that does not have a clue of English, she came from other school, and she tries to fit in, and do well in English, but she really does not know much about it, so I will start from the basic things of English to help her in a way. On the other hand I'm still struggling on what to do with the rest of my students, there is a great gap between them, some of them knows what they have to know at this level, while some others do not have even a basic level, eventhough they are together from kindergarden. Such a hard labor for us as a future teachers of English...struggling from the very beginning...from our intership...just to see the real world upcoming...just to see what public education really means...should I try the three-step process that the article says?.. is it doable in the Chilean classrooms?? can someone respond me??
